ANUARY 15–Musician Wyclef Jean’s charitable foundation–now the recipient of many donations big and small in the wake of the Haiti earthquake–has repeatedly had its corporate status dissolved for failing to file required state disclosure reports, records show. As seen below, the Florida Division of Corporations has, on four separate occasions over the past five years, sanctioned the Yele Haiti Foundation (the charity was incorporated in Florida in 1998 as the Wyclef Jean Foundation, but formally changed its name two months ago). The longest involuntarily dissolution lasted 26 months, ending in November 2008 when Jean’s organization provided Florida officials with overdue annual reports disclosing the identities of the group’s officers and directors, its registered agent, and office address. The foundation’s most recent dissolution occurred in September 2009, but was vacated a month later when the 37-year-old Jean’s group filed its disclosure report. As TSG reported yesterday, the Jean foundation’s records delinquency extended to the filing of its tax returns–and could make a prospective donor question whether the organizationally challenged foundation is a wise choice for disaster relief contributions. In August 2009, the group filed overdue tax returns for 2005, 2006, and 2007, documents showing that Jean and fellow board member Jerry Duplessis paid themselves at least $410,000 for services provided to the foundation. investigation to determine how a small amount of cocaine ended up in a space shuttle hangar at the agency’s Florida spaceport.

A bag containing a small amount of white powder residue that was later confirmed to be cocaine was discovered in the space shuttle Discovery’s hangar at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The hangar, known as the Orbiter Processing Facility, is a restricted zone for shuttle workers only.

The cocaine was discovered Tuesday when a shuttle worker spotted it outside a bathroom and reported it to NASA security, agency spokesman Allard Beutel told Space.com on Thursday. An on-site test of the bag stated it was cocaine, and subsequent follow-up tests confirmed it was the drug, he said.

DEATH TOLL

According to the BBC, The Guardian and AFP, the death toll of Haiti catastrophic earthquake will be in the hundreds or even thousands. Overnight, Port-au-Prince was in total darkness with a large number of people sleeping outside in fear of more aftershocks. Large structures such as the Presidential Palace and the cathedral suffered major damages. A UN representative said that the UN local head quarter in Haiti has “sustained serious damage along with other installations, and a large number of personnel are missing”.

In his first interview since the earthquake, Haitian President Rene Preval has said thousands of people are feared dead. Speaking with the Miami Herald, President Preval described the situation in Port-au-Prince as “dire and unimaginable.” “Parliament has collapsed, the tax office has collapsed, schools have collapsed, hospital have collapsed. There are a lot of schools that have a lot of dead people in them,” said President Preval.

The Red Cross says that more than 3 million people are affected by the tragedy. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said today that the head of the UN mission in Haiti and his deputy were among more than 100 UN staff missing. According to AP, Port-au-Prince’s catholic archbishop is among those reported killed. In a phone interview with CNN, Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said that he believes the death toll could be higher than 100,000. According to Reuters, the Pentagon has just ordered a nuclear aircraft carrier and 3 amphibious ships to set sail for Haiti. The French Foreign Minister says the French embassy in Port-au-Prince is “destroyed and hundreds of French national are missing”
